Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

What is the Seven Principles Workshop?

The Seven Principles Workshop is an 8-week psycho-educational workshop, held virtually, that helps couples to strengthen their relationship. Through lectures and Couples Exercises, couples will learn how to:

  • Improve friendship, fondness, and admiration

  • Enhance romance and intimacy

  • Manage conflict constructively

  • Gain skills to address perpetual and solvable problems

  • Create shared meaning

  • Maintain gains throughout a lifetime

How long is each class?

The workshop consists of one 2-hour class held each week.

Who is this workshop for?

The workshop is for pre-engaged, engaged, and married couples. Whether happily married or going through a rough patch, every couple will benefit.

Who is the workshop not for?

It is not recommended that couples dealing with severe relationship distress, emotional abuse, domestic violence, active addictions, or serious mental health problems partake in the workshop. In these cases, we recommend connecting with a Gottman Therapist by visiting this site.

Will we have to share our personal problems and issues with the class?

No. The class does not include sharing problems or issues publicly. Couples Exercises are done privately.

Must both partners attend or can I come alone?

Since the class involves couples doing the exercises together, both partners must participate.

One or both of us isn't a reader. Can we still come to the class if we haven't read the book?

Yes, still come to the class. While the book provides very valuable information, the class lectures will summarize the content of the book.

Should we do the exercises in the book at home or save them for class?

The class will involve doing some of the exercises from the book so doing them first at home would duplicate some of them. It's best to save them for class. For the exercises that can't be completed during class, they will be assigned for homework.
